About
Makasutu is a 1,000-acre privately owned forest and wetland reserve near Kembujeh, run as a community-tourism project for over twenty years — one of The Gambia's original and best cultural day-outs. The full-day experience, around eight hours, weaves together a canoe trip through the mangrove creeks, a palm-wine tapper's demonstration, a Mandinka drumming session and a Gambian buffet lunch deep in the forest. Transfers from the coast, the canoe trip, the cultural demonstrations, lunch and an English-speaking guide are all included, in groups of two to twenty, and the easy pace suits families as well as older travellers. Between the set pieces there's time to walk the forest and watch for monkeys and birds. It's polished and a touch touristy, but genuinely well run and rooted in the community — a relaxed, well-rounded introduction to Gambian nature and culture in a single day.
