Best Time to Visit Senegal: A Month-by-Month Guide

The short answer: November to mid-February is the sweet spot — dry, warm, low humidity, cool nights, and still green from the rains. The Saint-Louis Jazz Festival in May is a compelling reason to stretch into the shoulder season; the wet summer months are not.

Quick-answer box

  • Best overall: November and February
  • Cheapest with good weather: early November, late February, March
  • Peak prices: late December, UK half-terms
  • Best for birdwatchers: November–February (Palearctic migrants present)
  • Saint-Louis Jazz Festival: mid-May [VERIFY: 2026 dates]
  • Avoid (beach holiday): June–September

The two seasons that matter

Senegal's climate is straightforward: a long dry season (roughly November to May) and a shorter but intense wet season (June to October, peaking in August–September). The Atlantic coast stays slightly cooler and less humid than the interior throughout.

The Harmattan — a dry, dusty wind from the Sahara — arrives in December and dominates January and February. It cools mornings to 17–20 °C north of Dakar and creates a characteristic haze. Photographers grumble; early-morning birders and walkers love the temperatures. By March it weakens and temperatures rise.

Month by month

November — the underrated opener

Dry, warm (27–31 °C coast), properly green from the rains, low humidity. Palearctic migrants have arrived; the country is open and uncrowded. Flight prices are shoulder-season. One of the two best months for most travellers.

Book now if: you want peak-quality weather without peak prices.

December — two different holidays

First two weeks: excellent weather, moderate crowds, good value. From about 18 December prices spike 30–50% and Saly resorts fill with European packages. If you must travel over Christmas/New Year, book 4–5 months ahead.

January — peak season

Daytime 26–29 °C on the coast. Harmattan cools mornings to 17–19 °C north of Dakar — bring a fleece for early starts. Zero rain. High humidity is absent. The Almadies restaurants and Saint-Louis courtyards are busy. Prices ease from about 10 January.

Best for: those who want guaranteed conditions and don't mind paying for them.

February — the quiet favourite

Similar weather to January, slightly warmer (28–31 °C). Harmattan weakens through the month. UK February half-term week is a pricing exception — the two weeks either side are significantly cheaper and barely less enjoyable.

March — warm, cheap, empty

Temperatures climb to 30–33 °C by daytime. Humidity is still low. Hotel rates in Dakar and Saint-Louis fall 20–35%. The Atlantic warms to 22–23 °C. Strong value pick for flexible travellers.

April — hot season begins

Daytime 31–34 °C. The Petite Côte beach resorts discount heavily. Markets and restaurants are quiet; streets are easier. Easter week is a minor pricing blip for French families.

May — Saint-Louis Jazz, then heat

The Saint-Louis Jazz Festival (mid-May, four days, UNESCO city) is the cultural event of the year — African and European musicians, courtyard concerts, the town transformed. Organise accommodation 4+ months ahead. Outside the festival, late May sees humidity climbing and the first thunderstorms approaching.

Book now if: the Jazz Festival is your objective. Otherwise this is the last month of the comfortable season.

June–October — rainy season

Heavy afternoon storms, humidity north of 85%, malaria risk higher. Most Saly and Petite Côte hotels close for refurbishment. Dakar is quieter and significantly cheaper. The country is at its greenest; birdwatching is excellent for dedicated travellers who can handle heat and mud. Not recommended for a first visit or a beach holiday.

FAQ

Is Senegal too hot in April?

For daytime activity, it depends. Mornings and evenings are fine; midday (32–34 °C) requires shade and water. The humidity is still low in April, which makes it considerably more bearable than, say, August in the same heat.

When should I visit if I want both Dakar and Saint-Louis?

January or early February — the Harmattan cools the north, both cities are open and active, and flights are at sensible prices outside the Christmas peak.

When is the cheapest time with passable weather?

Early November and the last week of March / first half of April — 40% below peak prices with 90% of the peak conditions.

Do I need to book ahead for November travel?

For mid-range Dakar hotels, 2–3 months is fine. For Saint-Louis during the Jazz Festival, 4–5 months minimum.
